Could the traffic spike of visits without page views have been caused by external images in the e-mail that are hosted on the sender's web site? In other words, if someone opens an e-mail and his e-mail client allows external images to be loaded, it would add a hit to the visitor log for that external image. If I understand correctly, no page actually gets viewed in this case (unless the person clicks the link in their e-mail), but the image download might get recorded as a visit?
